Useful Information

Practical tips for looking after your vehicle between services.

How often should I service my vehicle?

Follow the interval in your service book, which is often every 10 000 to 15 000 km or once a year. Vehicles used for towing, short trips or dusty roads may need servicing sooner.

What do the dashboard warning lights mean?

Red lights, such as oil pressure, engine temperature and brakes, mean stop safely as soon as you can and switch off. Amber lights, such as engine management, mean the vehicle needs to be checked soon. Never ignore a warning light that stays on.

How do I check my tyres?

Check pressures monthly when the tyres are cold, using the figures in your owner's manual or on the door pillar. Look for cracks, bulges and uneven wear. South African law requires at least 1 mm of tread across the tyre, but grip in the wet is better when tyres are replaced earlier.

What should I do if my engine overheats?

Pull over safely and switch off the engine. Do not open the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Let it cool, then check the coolant level and call for help if the temperature rises again.

What should I check before a long trip?

Check tyre pressures and the spare, oil and coolant levels, lights and wipers, and brake feel. Have any noises or warning lights looked at before you leave.

What should I tell the workshop when I book?

Tell us about any noises, vibrations, leaks, smells or warning lights, and when they happen. The more detail you give us, the faster we can find the fault.
